Hour markers, numerals and tracks
Choose how the dial tells you where you are before adding more decoration around the hands.
Hour markers give orientation; a minute track supplies finer reference points. They can cooperate, but they are not the same layer of information. A dial can keep its hour markers while dropping the track, or retain a detailed outer scale with very little furniture inside it.
Symbols and numbers
Batons make a regular sequence of bars; applied dots add round, raised forms. Arabic numerals identify the hours directly. Breguet-style numerals use a more calligraphic vocabulary; Breguet treats its drawn numerals as a distinct design signature, not just any italic font. Explorer 3-6-9 emphasises three compass points, as documented on Rolex's Explorer. Quarter Arabic uses four numbered quarters instead. Rolex Explorer. California mixes Roman and Arabic regions; None leaves orientation to the hands and any remaining track. These are layout choices, not movement complications.
Scales and crosshairs
A railroad track encloses repeated marks between circular boundaries, resembling sleepers between rails. A. Lange & Söhne identifies this peripheral minute scale as a feature of its 1815 family. Lange's 1815 design. Dots suggest a lighter scale; no track removes it. A crosshair adds horizontal and vertical reference lines, not another timekeeping function.
In the atelier
Hour markers live under Hands & markers; minute tracks and the crosshair live under Dial → Tracks & dial details. The renderer clears selected markers and lines around conflicting indications, and some controls are hidden for specialised layouts. Numerals are stylised artwork rather than exact branded lettering or individually machined metal appliques; the Breguet-inspired option uses an italic approximation. Trim colour and lume treatment further alter the appearance without certifying a physical construction.
Shaped tracks follow the aperture, but minute marks intersect true six-degree time-bearing rays from the hand axis. They are not spaced at equal distances around an ellipse: that would put many marks at the wrong reading angle. Numeral and text bounds must also clear the actual opening. The eight case families do not use a stretched circular dial image. Digital modules have their own screen layout rather than these analog marker controls.
