Mother-of-pearl
A natural dial material whose appearance changes with the shell and the viewing angle, not a flat pearlescent paint.
Mother-of-pearl is valued for variation rather than perfectly uniform colour. Its shell-derived surface can look quiet head-on, then reveal different tones as the watch moves. A flat colour chip can suggest the palette, but cannot describe that changing lustre.
Read the material specification
Rolex explains that mother-of-pearl varies in colour and structure with its origin and the part of the shell selected. It also states that its own mother-of-pearl dials are not artificially coloured. That is a statement about Rolex's practice, not a rule that every maker must follow. Rolex's mother-of-pearl description.
Natural material and pearlescent appearance are different claims. A coating can evoke a similar visual effect without containing a slice of nacre. If the material itself matters to you, look for an explicit maker description rather than inferring it from a photograph or the word “pearl” in a colour name.
Choosing furniture
Keep the first experiment simple: try a light dial with dark hands and a modest number of markers. Then rotate it and see whether the hands remain distinct when the surface brightens. Ornate numerals can work, but adding them together with a crosshair and several lines of text gives the eye several competing patterns to resolve.
This is not a finish reserved for one style or wearer. The important relationship is between the material's visual activity and the clarity of the information placed above it.

Mother-of-pearl combines generated flowing texture with an approximate iridescent material response. It is not an individual shell sample, a full optical model of nacre or a prediction of a supplied dial. The selectable colours are artistic tints.
