The Moonphase
An astronomical display needs a mechanism, an aperture and a clearly stated level of approximation.
A moonphase display represents the changing illuminated portion of the Moon. It is not a day/night indicator: the lunar cycle lasts roughly a month, rather than one day.
Why the approximation matters
The average cycle is about 29 days, 12 hours and 44 minutes. A traditional simplified arrangement approximates that as 29.5 days. The difference accumulates, so an owner eventually corrects the display. More elaborate gear trains can improve the approximation; A. Lange & Söhne specifies a 122.6-year one-day correction interval for the LANGE 1 MOON PHASE, assuming uninterrupted operation. Lange's lunar-cycle explanation.
That is a specification of a particular mechanism, not something every moonphase watch inherits by using a similar blue aperture.
A conventional display places two moon motifs on a rotating disc behind a fixed, scalloped opening. The dial's curved shoulders progressively conceal each motif; at full moon, the complete circle should clear the opening. Blancpain describes a 59-tooth arrangement covering two 29.5-day cycles, advanced once per day. Its specified switching time is not a universal rule for other movements. Make room for the display
The moon, aperture and surrounding dial furniture must have enough visual separation. A dense minute track, an inscription and a date cannot all occupy the same space without compromise.
For a restrained design, compare a pale dial with a dark lunar aperture, then try a darker dial with lighter hands. The goal is to keep ordinary time readable as well as making the complication attractive.
The Raymond Weil Millesime and Frederique Constant Moneta provide visual examples of a modest moon motif and curved lower mask. They are appearance references, not evidence that their movements or dial dimensions are interchangeable with the Atelier calibre.
In the atelier
The modeled SW280-1 places its moon display near six and its date window at three. The illustration rotates two moon motifs behind a fixed scalloped aperture using the clock and a mean lunar cycle. This is dial artwork, not a physical 59-tooth gear train or a reproduction of the selected calibre's setting and drift behaviour. The 3D scene refreshes the artwork at local midnight. The blue field and stars are visual styling, not a sky map.
There is no lunar-correction control, astronomical-accuracy certification or claim that every selected dial and case forms a purchasable assembly.
